Fiji parliament holds first sitting

Fiji, home to a large ethnic Indian population, held the first sitting of its newly-elected parliament Monday, media reported.

This was the first time the parliament sitting was held since the 2006 military coup in the country. The coup was led by Voreqe Frank Bainimarama, who has become the country's new prime minister after the elections held last month, Fiji Live reported.

FijiFirst, led by Bainimarama, won 32 seats, the Social Democratic Liberal Party won 15 while the National Federation Party won three seats in the 2014 general elections held Sep 17 to the 50-seat Fijian parliament.

Ethnic Indians comprise 37 percent of Fiji's population of nearly 900,000.

Most of them are descendants of indentured labourers who were brought in from India between 1879 and 1916 to work in the country's sugarcane plantations.
