A major fire broke out at the Income Tax department's office - Aaykar Bhawan - in Allahabad on Monday, police said.
The fire was brought under control by fire tenders after great difficulty but much damage had been done by then to the files, records, computers and furniture, an official informed.
The Joint Commissioner's office was fully gutted in the fire.
Officials of the IT department said the police prima facie apprehend that a short circuit triggered the fire, but added they will also probe if there was any mischief behind the incident.
No loss of life or any injuries to any personnel deployed at the office has been reported.
