A fire broke out in a shoe factory here on Tuesday afternoon as work was underway but there were no casualties as all the employees were safely evacuated, a fire department official said.
"A fire broke out in the chemical unit of a shoe factory in south Kolkata's Kasba industrial belt at around 3.30 p.m. when the production work was on," said the official.
With the entire area covered in thick smoke as the chemical unit was engulfed by flames, eight fire tenders battled for about an hour and a half to douse the blaze, the official said.
"The reason of the fire is yet to be ascertained. However, no injuries were reported in the incident," the official added.
