Former legislator and BJP leader Samarpal Singh was killed early Monday when his car rammed into a stationary truck in Uttar Pradesh, his family said.
The former Lucknow university president's driver and another person in the car suffered critical injuries in the accident, which took place near Chotta Hasanpur village on the Meerut-Kithore road.
Samarpal Singh, 56, was considered a prominent face in western Uttar Pradesh. He represented Barnawa constituency in the state assembly, having won on a Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) ticket in 2002.
He joined the Bharatiya Janata Party during the 2012 assembly polls and unsuccesfully contested from Shivalkhas constituency in Meerut.
