Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Wednesday laid the foundation stone of the Indo-UK Institute of Health (IUIH) Medicity here.
The facility is being developed in association with King's College Hospital, London, with an investment outlay of Rs 1,600 crore.
The IUIH programme was included as a commercial announcement in the Joint statement during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Britain in November 2015.
The announcement included the proposal for 11 new Indo-UK Institutes for Health in India which, when fully implemented, would amount to investment in the region of Rs 17,600 crore into India's healthcare system, accompanied by strategic, clinical and training partnerships with Britain's finest NHS organisations, universities and private sector companies.
IUIH programme, led by Dr. Ajay Rajan Gupta, Group MD and CEO, aims to deliver this vision by developing IUIH Medicities and IUIH Clinics across India.
Each Medicity is planned to include a 1,000 bed hospital in close partnership with one of Britain's leading NHS hospitals.
'IUIH has a vision to provide integrated healthcare across India by apartnering with global leaders' in research, education, technology, manufacturing and healthcare delivery,' said Gupta.
Healthcare UK and the Department for International Trade (DIT) India are supporting IUIH with its plans.
'This ambitious project will see NHS standards of care supporting the healthcare needs of the people of Andhra Pradesh. We hope that this collaboration will lead to closer working between our two countries in the healthcare sector,' said Jane Grady, Deputy Director, Trade, Economics and Prosperity, British High Commission, India.
The project is supported by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and Invest India, which is the national investment promotion and facilitation agency for India promoted by Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
