France is planning to convene a meeting of countries backing the Syrian opposition on May 9 to discuss ways to resume diplomatic talks, a French government official announced on Wednesday.

Government spokesperson Stephane Le Foll, said officials from Qatar, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Saudi Arabia and Turkey would attend the meeting, Xinhua reported.

"All the initiatives will be taken to promote the resumption of peace talks," he said after a cabinet meeting.

A ceasefire accord, brokered by Russia and the US, entered into force in February but collapsed following renewed violence in Aleppo.
