Girish Chandra Gupta sworn in as Calcutta HC chief justice

Justice Girish Chandra Gupta was on Wednesday sworn in as Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court.

West Bengal Governor K.N. Tripathi administered the oath of office to Justice Gupta at the Raj Bhavan in the presence of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Gupta replaces Manjula Chellur, who has taken over as Chief Justice of Bombay High Court.

He was functioning as the acting chief justice of the high court since August 22 after Chellur's transfer.

Speaking after the ceremony, Justice Gupta described the oath of a judge as a complete code of conduct, that "incorporates in itself all the standard".

West Bengal Finance Minister Amit Mitra, top bureaucrats and police officers, members of the diplomatic corps and armed forces' officers attended the ceremony.

It is after 30 years, that a sitting judge of the Calcutta High Court has been made its Chief Justice. On November 1, 1986, Justice Chittatosh Mookerje was elevated as the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court.

According to the high court website, Justice Gupta was born on December 1, 1954.

He enrolled as an advocate on September 20, 1982 and practised in the Calcutta High Court for 17 years in civil, constitutional, company, arbitration and commercial matters.

He was made a permanent Judge of the Calcutta High Court on September 15, 2000.

Justice Gupta is slated to retire in December.
