Goa Governor Bharat Wir Wanchoo should resign "for his own good", a state BJP leader said here.
This is the sternest missive yet to Wanchoo by the Bharatiya Janata Party which has been steadily stepping up the pressure on him after the party romped to a victory in the Lok Sabha polls this year.
Wanchoo is likely to be quizzed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with the Agusta Westland VVIP chopper scam.
"We are telling him for his own good," BJP state vice president Wilfred Mesquita told IANS. He was speaking to IANS on the sidelines of a formal media interaction at the party's state headquarters in Panaji Friday.
"We have nothing personal against the governor. But when such controversies arise they should step aside, because otherwise it casts a shadow over the dignity of the Constitutional Post," Mesquita said.
Former National Security Advisor and current West Bengal governor M.K. Narayanan has already been questioned by the CBI in connection with the chopper scam and media reports suggest that Wanchoo could be next in line.
The governor is still to complete three years of his term. Wanchoo, a former Indian Police Service officer was the head of the elite Special Protection Group.
According to the CBI, both Wanchoo and Narayanan were part of meetings which led to the the high ceiling of the VVIP choppers sought being reduced, enabling Agusta Westland - an Italian chopper manufacturer - to enter the picture.
