Goa's Leader of Opposition Pratapsing Rane is scared of visiting Calangute, one of the top beach destinations in the country, as it is "unsafe".
"Calangute is becoming notorious for crimes," Rane told the Goa legislative assembly while speaking about the beach village 15 km from here.
Calangute is one of the most sought after destinations on the tourist itinerary. It is famous for its nightlife and party hotspots.
Rane said that crime and prostitution had increased to such levels that even he was scared of visiting the area.
"I used to go to Calangute once upon a time, but now I get scared to go there," Rane said.
The leader of the opposition also said that an increasing number of crimes in Calangute was giving a bad name to the state.
Britain's foreign ministry has already warned its nationals to be on guard while visiting Calangute, because of recurring crime in the area.
