Prison authorities in Goa have started a probe into a series of alleged assaults on undertrials, some of them foreign nationals booked in narcotics possession cases, by jail guards, a top official said on Tuesday.
Speaking to IANS, Inspector General of Prisons Elvis Gomes said an enquiry had been ordered and a report had been sought from the prison authorities at the newly-commissioned Colvale central jail in north Goa.
"There are allegations that some prisoners were beaten up by guards sometime back. I have asked the jail superintendent at Colvale central jail to send a report," Gomes said.
The allegations surfaced on Monday after a prison inmate, during a court hearing, informed the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances District and Sessions Judge Desmond D'Costa about the assault by jail guards.
