Coming to the aid of a bridegroom from the Balmiki community in Kurukshetra, the Haryana Police not only arrested 14 people who tried to stop him performing a traditional wedding ritual but also ensured it was done, a senior police officer said on Friday.
Kurukshetra police chief Simardeep Singh said that a groom was allegedly prevented by members of the dominant caste from carrying out the "Ghurchari" ritual, or riding a mare for his wedding ceremony, on May 21 in Bhusthla village.
"A police team, after getting the information, immediately rushed to the spot and got completed the ritual of 'Ghurchari'," Singh said, adding that there was peace in the village following police intervention.
He said that police has arrested 14 accused and produced them before the court, which ordered their judicial remand.
