Heavy rain in the national capital on Saturday brought relief from the sweltering heat but caused water-logging leading to traffic snarls in parts of the city.

The temperature here on Saturday dipped significantly to 27 degrees Celsius recorded at 11.30 a.m. from the maximum of 38 degrees Celsius, four notches above the season's average, on Friday.

"The city received 23.4 mm rainfall till 8.30 a.m. today (Saturday) and 1.6 mm rainfall was recorded between 8.30 a.m. and 11.30 a.m.," an official from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

The rain also led to flooding of streets and traffic jams in several parts of Delhi.

"The water-logging led to traffic congestion between Sagarpur and Dhaula Kuan, Moti Bagh metro station and other parts of the city," a Delhi Traffic Police official said.

The official said a report regarding a part of the road caving-in was received from Yashwant Place in south Delhi.

Traffic movement was obstructed between Hamdard Nagar and Badarpur, a road that connects Delhi with the satellite city of Faridabad, after a tree fell and a DTC bus broke down, the official said.

People were seen taking shelter under trees and flyovers.

The minimum temperature was recorded at 26 degrees Celsius, the season's average, on Saturday.

The Met office has forecast more rainfall and cloudy sky in the days ahead.
