Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda Saturday appealed to Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi to save farmers of Haryana and Punjab origin who have been cultivating land in Gujarat from eviction.
Reminding Modi of a bill recently passed by the Haryana assembly for safeguarding the interests of farmers from Haryana, Hooda hoped that Modi would make some announcement in this regard at the rally he (Modi) is going to address in Rewari town, 90 km from New Delhi, Sunday.
"I hope Mr Modi would make an announcement to safeguard the interests of farmers of Punjab and Haryana in Gujarat. Laws are enacted to safeguard the interests of people and not to uproot them," Hooda said while addressing farmers who came to meet him here Saturday.
Scores of farmers from Haryana and Punjab who have been settled in Gujarat for several years and were farming there are likely to be evicted from their land under a new law that has come into force in Gujarat.
"Although the farmers have got the registries of their land, they are being uprooted," Hooda said.
This will be the first rally to be addressed by Modi, who was annointed as the BHaratiya Janata Party's prime ministerial candidate Friday.
