Hungary opens station to refugees after stand-off

Hungarian authorities on Thursday opened the main railway station in the capital Budapest to refugees following a two-day stand-off, the media reported.

People could be seen pouring up the steps towards the platforms after the doors of Keleti station were opened, BBC reported.

The move came as Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orban is scheduled to hold talks on the migrant crisis in the Belgian capital of Brussels later in the day.

Hungarian police officers since Tuesday, prevented refugees mostly from conflict-hit Middle Eastern countries, who gathered outside the station's building, from boarding trains leaving for Germany and Austria.

Hungary, which belongs to the Schengen area that allows free movement among 26 European countries, announced that it has received more than 150,000 immigrants since the beginning of the year.

The number of migrants entering Europe has reached record levels, with 107,500 arriving in July alone.
