India Monday provided Nepal $3.8 million in aid for building embankments along rivers flowing from Nepal to India, in a bid to control floods in the Himalayan nation and adjoining areas in India.
The aid - equivalent to NRs.374.68 million - was handed over to Umakant Jha, Nepal's minister of energy, irrigation and science and technology and environment, by India's Ambassador Ranjit Rae.
India's contribution towards construction of embankments along the Lalbakeya, Bagmati and Kamala rivers in Nepal was undertaken following the seventh meeting of the India-Nepal Joint Committee on Inundation and Flood Management.
These rivers have been posing flood-related threats to India.
With the present assistance, the total grant from India for embankment construction stands at NRs.2,917.68 million.
"India remains committed to continue working closely with Nepal for further cooperation in the field of water resources so that this contributes to the development and prosperity of a close and friendly neighbour," said a statement by the Indian embassy.
