India and Pakistan need to be more humane in treating each other's prisoners, Pakistan High Commissioner Salman Bashir said Tuesday.

"We should have a more humane aspect in terms of how we treat each others prisoners.. meaning those who have completed their term should be repatriated back to their country as soon as possible," said Bashir during an interaction at the PHD Chambers of Commerce and Industries.

Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh, who was on the death row for years, succumbed to grievous injuries following a murderous assault in Lahore's Kot Lakhpat Jail in May.

A day later Pakistani prisoner Sanaullah Ranjay, who was undergoing imprisonment at Jammu's Kot Bhalwal Jail, was attacked by an Indian prisoner. He died later in a Chandigarh hospital.

According to official figures, 491 Indian prisoners are lodged in Pakistani jails while 386 Pakistani prisoners are in Indian jails.
