A suspected Indian cricket bookie has been detained from Jessore's Benapole in Bangladesh.
Benapole immigration police OC Md Moniruzzaman said higher authorities here had imposed an embargo on Atanu Dutta's leaving Bangladesh, reports bdnews24.com.
There was a 'red alert' in the immigration section over the past three days because of the embargo, he said.
"We suspect Dutta had entered Bangladesh to bet in the ongoing T20 World Cup," the police officer said adding that he might have also been involved in smuggling.
Dutta, 40, hailing from West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district, came to Bangladesh March 15. He had been staying in Bangladesh illegally after the expiry of his visa March 31.
He sent his passport through another person to the Benapole customs for clearance, Thursday.
Police said they detained the man who brought the passport as he was carrying the passport of a "wanted" person.
Dutta was later detained from an office in Benapole at around 4 p.m. based on the information given by the detainee.
