Lured by the growth potential of the Indian market, the American Society for Metals (ASM) International, the world's largest association dealing in metal-centric materials scientists and engineers, is for the first time hosting MET-14, an international conference on emerging materials and processes for industrial applications, in India. It opened on Thursday.

ASM is a very popular name worldwide with more than 30,000 members for informing, educating, and connecting the materials community to solve problems and stimulate innovation around the world.

The Dec 4-6 event at The Exhibition Centre, near Mahatma Mandir, will cover the aviation, transportation, defence, automobile and engineering sectors, among others.

At the inaugural session, Sajjan Jindal, CMD of JSW, an $11 billion conglomerate with a presence in steel, energy, cement, infrastructure and IT, said: "The core objectives of organising such a big event is to absorb and transfer global technology and find sources of raw material and markets for finished products. This will go long way in fulfilling Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Make in India movement."

The event will provide opportunities for face-to-face interactions with industry players under one roof and will also fulfil the requirements of professional and skilled manpower. Export-oriented units will be able to identify new destinations as well as network in India. It will also be a platform to launch or display new products and build brands among the industry and new users

Heat treatment has changed beyond recognition, driven by a better understanding of the underlying science, increasing demand for products and quality requirements as also environmental considerations. In addition, the market has been shaped by technological developments such as the changing use of materials and advances in manufacturing techniques.
