Insurgents shoot down fighter jet in Ukraine

Pro-Russian insurgents shot down a Ukrainian fighter jet in the country's restive eastern region Sunday, a military spokesman said.

Spokesman Oleksiy Dmytrashkivsky said the MiG-29 jet was downed in the Lugansk region, where government forces have been fighting a bloody battle with pro-Russian insurgents since April, Xinhua reported.

The pilot of the jet was rescued by the troops, he added.

The incident happened as a Russian humanitarian convoy was moving toward the Ukrainian border for clearance to enter the country.
