International seminar to mark Tagore's Nobel centenary

The eastern metropolis is hosting music scholars from seven countries along with international musicians as part of Rabindra Bharati University's celebrations to mark the centenary of poet Rabindranath Tagore's Nobel prize.

Christened 'International Seminar on Creating and Teaching Music Patterns', the three-day conference which began Monday brings together musicologists from countries like the US, Germany, and South Africa, a statement said Tuesday.

The seminar will witness around 80 presentations from scholars in music, ethnomusicology, computer science, bio-physics, statistics, and other allied disciplines, it said.

Some of the speakers are Beth Bullard, former director, World Music Studies, George Mason University, USA; Sebastian Klotz, professor in Systematic Musicology, Leipzig University, Germany; Lars Christian Koch, director, Phonogram Archive, Museum of Ethnology, Germany; and Meki Nzwei, professor, University of Pretoria, South Africa.

Pianist Yaroslav Senyshyn from Canada and maestros of Indian classical music such as L. Subramaniam, Ustad Aashish Khan, and Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri are part of the stellar musical line-up.
