The 18-year-old case of non-filing of income tax (IT) returns against former Tamil Nadu chief minister J.Jayalalithaa and her friend Sasikala is expected to come to an end soon with the IT department accepting their plea for compounding of the offences.
The two had filed an application for compounding the offences with the IT department.
The department had informed a court here hearing the case that a sum of around Rs.2 crore was paid in the case, related to non-filing of tax returns by Jayalalithaa and Sasikala for 1991-92 and 1992-93.
In January, the Supreme Court had dismissed an appeal by Jayalalithaa for her discharge from the case and ordered the trial court to complete the proceedings within four months.
