Jharkhand Police chief D.K. Pandey on Wednesday reviewed the law and order situation in the state capital and expressed concern over the worsening crime situation, sources said.

The director general of state police asked the constabulary to treat law and order as a priority task and take necessary steps to improve the situation, police sources said.

The Ranchi city police's role came under scrutiny at the meeting since an engineer, who had informed police about a criminal gang threatening him and trying to extort money from him, was shot at and injured.

He was fired at near Morabadi Ground close to the residence of the chief minister and senior government officials.

This year till October, Ranchi has witnessed 176 murders, 42 cases of extortion and 67 of loot.

In the last fortnight, there were three murders in Ranchi. One person was shot dead in Bariatu locality on November 17 and a minor was raped and killed on November 18 in Ratu locality.

The chain snatching cases also have gone up.

The opposition parties have condemned the rising crime rate in Ranchi.

"One can imagine the situation of other districts of Jharkhand, considering the crime rate in Ranchi. The state capital seems to be turning into crime capital," said Jharkhand Congress general secretary Alok Dubey to IANS.
