The central government on Monday extended a rebate on handling charges for Exim (export/import) containers moved by rail on dedicated rakes at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT).
According to the Ministry of Shipping, the JNPT board granted a waiver of Rs.728 per container towards handling charges of Exim containers moved by rail on October 15, 2015, for a period of three months on a trial basis.
"To further encourage rail movement, the board has extended the rebate for another three months," the ministry said in a statement.
"Also, while the initial rebate was applicable to containers moved by dedicated rakes both ways, it will now also apply to containers which have either arrived through dedicated rakes or moved out through dedicated rakes placed on JNPCT lines."
The ministry added that the move will not only encourage the usage of railway transport, but also reduce the congestion and pollution on the roads around JN port.
