Kashmir governor for vigil on Pakistan border

"If there are no adverse developments along our frontiers, our people can look forward to enjoying the fruits of peace," the governor said after unfurling the national flag.

"However, till such time as sustained calm prevails on the northwestern frontiers, our security forces cannot even think of lowering their guard, under any circumstances," he added.

His remarks followed border clashes on the Line of Control (LoC) that divides Jammu and Kashmir between India and Pakistan leading to the death of Pakistani and Indian soldiers.

The main function was held at the Maulna Azad Memorial stadium in Jammu where Vohra took salute at a parade by army, paramilitary forces and police contingents as well as school students.

The governor said Jammu and Kashmir's growth and development can take place only in an environment of sustained peace and normalcy.

He said there had been "malicious trans-border factors and serious internal disturbances which our people have had to face for so many years".

The function was attended by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and other dignitaries.
