Kerala-based Eram Scientific received Rs.20 million grant from the Gates Foundation for developing cost effective and sustainable toilets.

Eram will be teaming up with US-based University of South Florida (USF) to test the new eToilet models.

This programme is an India-specific programme modelled on the Gates Foundation's global Reinvent the Toilet Challenge under which Eram was awarded Rs.30 million grant from the Gates Foundation in 2012.

Eram Group chairman Siddeek Ahmed said the new grant is for field testing of off-grid, self-sustained, modular, electronic toilet for houses and communities.
