A period of high suspense came to a happy end for Anil Akkare of the Congress, who had led by just three votes in Kerala's Wadakancherry constituency when an EVM with uncounted votes developed a snag, as he managed to win by a narrow margin on Thursday.
Election Commission officials had summoned experts to rectify the EVM, and the final count saw Akkare 43 votes ahead of his nearest rival, Mary Thomas of the Communist Party of India-Marxist.
Akkare, who won with the lowest margin in the state, is on of the 22 Congress candidates on the winning track in the state where the Left Democratic Front has already won.
