The eastern metropolis on Friday witnessed the coldest day of the season as mercury plummeted to 11.2 degrees Celsius on the back of an uninterrupted flow of the north-westerly winds sweeping the south Bengal districts, the weatherman said.

People were seen wearing long coats, woollens, monkey caps and mufflers, and savouring soups and other hot beverages.

However, the chilly weather could not dampen the spirits of the revellers, who visited the well-decorated Park Street, as also other popular sites likes the zoo, Eco park, Victoria memorial.

The city's minimum temperature was three degrees below normal while the maximum temperature touched 23 degrees Celsius, also three degrees below the normal, according to the Regional Meteorological Centre.

According to an met official, the city should brace for a chilly spell in the coming 3-4 days as the mercury might dip further in the absence of western disturbances.

"An uninterrupted flow of the north-westerly winds has been bringing down the mercury. Conditions are favourable for a chilly spell to continue for the next 3-4 days. The mercury could go down further," an official of the local weather office said.

The minimum temperature on Thursday was recorded at 11.5 degree Celsius.

Night temperatures would likely to continue below normal by 2-4 degrees over land areas of the region during the next 3 days in the south Bengal districts, local weather office said.
