An engineer working with a software firm was arrested here for allegedly duping foreign based clients of another IT firm, police said on Wednesday.
The cyber crime wing of the Bidhannagar police commissionerate arrested Akhilesh Shaw on Tuesday following complaints that he used confidential data and siphoned off $20,000-30,000 of clients of an IT Firm he was associated with earlier.
"Shaw used credit and debit card details available with the firm and along with several accomplices siphoned off between $20,000 to 30,000," Deputy Commissioner K.P. Barui said.
The swindle came to light last month after the IT firm lodged a police complaint that sensitive company data was stolen.
"The victims are mostly from US, UK and Australia," said Barui and added that Shaw has been remanded in police custody till Friday.
"There are several gangs involved in such kinds of fraud. We are confident of arresting them as well," added the officer.
