Aam Aadmi Party leader Ashish Khetan on Tuesday said that "laxity" on the part of the Delhi Police was the real reason behind party worker Soni's death.

"It is clearly mentioned in the victim's complaint letter to the Chief Minister that police was not taking action against the culprit and was instead helping the accused. In her complaint letter, Soni described Delhi Police's careless attitude towards addressing her problem," Khetan told media.

Soni committed suicide on July 19 after being allegedly harassed by Ramesh Bhardwaj, who claimed to be a supporter of Aam Aadmi Party legislator from Narela Sharad Chauhan.

The AAP has clarified that Bhardwaj was in no way associated with the party.

Khetan said in her letter Soni said that the accused Bhardwaj was threatening her with dire consequences while police was doing nothing. Soni also accused the investigation officer of supporting him.

"All these things put the police's role under suspicion. Delhi Police's lax behaviour in solving Soni's problem was the real reason behind her suicide," Khetan said.

He added that after receiving Soni's complaint, the Chief Minister's Office sought a reply from the Delhi Police. In its reply on June 30, the police said that the investigative officer had been removed from the case.

"Instead of providing justice to Soni, Delhi Police only removed the investigative officer. This clarifies that the police was hand in glove with the culprit and wanted to save him," Khetan said.

Aam Aadmi Party's national spokesperson Sanjay Singh accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of indulging in politics over the issue.

"BJP is only doing politics over the issue and they do not bother about providing justice to the victim's family. BJP leaders and Delhi Police are deliberately framing AAP leaders in fake cases to tarnish their image," Singh said.

He said that the AAP legislator from Narela was being framed in the case as Bhardwaj had never been associated with the party in any manner.

Chauhan was arrested last week along with five others here in connection with the woman party worker's suicide.
