The CPI and CPI-M have urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to fulfil the promises made to the people of Andhra Pradesh.

In a joint letter to the prime minister, the general secretaries of the two communist parties called upon him to make an announcement in this regard at the foundation stone-laying ceremony of state capital Amaravati on Thursday.

Communist Party of India (CPI) general secretary S. Sudhakar Reddy and Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury drew Modi's attention to the assurances made by the central government when the Andhra Pradesh bifurcation Bill was passed in parliament.

They said MPs of the Left parties had raised many issues and the people were assured that all these problems would be addressed and immediate measures would be undertaken to solve them and redress the economic backwardness in various regions of these states (Andhra Pradesh and Telangana).

"Unfortunately, there has been no forward movement on any of these assurances that were then given by the central government and later repeated by your government after you assumed office as prime minister," they wrote.

"Though delayed, at least now, an announcement by you redeeming these promises at the foundation ceremony at Amaravati, the designated capital city of the state of Andhra Pradesh, would be appropriate," they added.
