The petrol pump dealers' association here Thursday urged the Uttar Pradesh transport commissioner to make buying helmets compulsory at the time of buying vehicles.
The suggestion came after the association's refusal to comply with the transport commissioner's order to refuse to refuel vehicles of those people who do not wear helmets in two-wheelers and seat belts in cars.
In a representation to the district magistrate, association president Jaivir Singh said police should enforce the government order by effective checking on roads.
The association informed the district magistrate that customers have threatened to challenge the transport commissioner's order in court, terming it "beyond jurisdiction".
