A 52-year-old man committed suicide by consuming a poisonous substance after his 32-year-old daughter accused him of raping her for the past 12 years, police said Wednesday.

The man, a bus driver, who lived in Govindpuri area of south Delhi, was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Saturday in a critical condition by a relative but died during treatment Sunday, police said.

The man's daughter lodged a police complaint Friday, saying that her father raped her several times in the past 12 years at their home in Govindpuri.

Four months ago she had left her home and started living in a women's home (Nari Niketan) located in north Delhi's Wazirabad area. She was unmarried.

Police said the woman's brother-in-law Friday informed the administrative members of the Nari Niketan about the matter and sought permission for taking her to the police station for filing a case against her father.

The man was depressed by his daughter's allegations, said a police officer.
