A man accused of murder was Wednesday shot dead by five gunmen in a court premises here in Uttar Pradesh, police said. Policemen escorting him abandoned him when the attack began.
Hoshiyar Singh was targeted at an Aligarh court where he was about to be presented before a judge. His brother Nira was critically injured in the attack.
Deputy Inspector General of police Prakash D. said the assailants, who fired 10 bullets, escaped after the attack.
Protests broke out in the court premises as lawyers raised anti-police slogans. Prakash was heckled by lawyers when he reached the site.
Hoshiyar Singh was an accused in the murder of a property dealer in Aligarh district.
