Union Minister Maneka Gandhi on Friday criticised the Kerala government's decision to kill stray dogs, terming it "unlawful and unscientific".
Reacting to the Kerala Cabinet's decision to kill "dangerous" stray dogs, Gandhi, who is also a leading animal rights activist, said: "This is an excuse to kill any dog."
She also asked the state government where the money given to it for sterilisation of dogs has gone.
"Where is the money given by Animal Welfare Board of India to Kerala for sterilisation of dogs? Where has that gone?" she asked.
Meanwhile, the Kerala government on Thursday sanctioned Rs 5 lakh compensation for the family of 65-year-old woman Sheeluamma who was devoured by dozens of stray dogs on August 19, barely 10 km from the state secretariat in Thiruvananthapuram.
