Maoists shot dead a 23-year-old college student who they suspected of being a police informer in Gadchiroli in Maharashtra, an official said here on Monday.
The victim, Rakesh K. Gavde, was a resident of Mauja-Gurja village in Aheri sub-district and studied in second-year degree course in a nearby college.
Besides studies, Gavde also used to create awareness about government schemes and policies among the local villagers, besides engaging in other social activities, said the official.
Around 2 a.m. on Monday, a group of Maoists entered the village, barged into Gavde's home and fired several bullets at him before disappearing in the darkness.
Following the incident, the security forces have stepped up vigil against the Maoists in the entire region and are trying to track the killers, the official said.
