Asserting that he doesn't owe anyone anything, Argentine football legend Diego Maradona has reiterated his refusal to pay tax debts to Italy reportedly amounting to more than 40 million euros ($43.9 million).
In an interview published on Wednesday by Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, the Argentine legend said the Italian authorities have been unjustly claiming more than $43.9 million for the last 25 years, including 35 million euros ($38.4 million) as penalties for alleged tax violation that has been considered non-existent by all judges, reports Efe.
He pointed out that even if there was a debt, it had been already paid by Italian club Napoli under a decision of debt relief in 2003, as manifested by his lawyer Angelo Pisani.
Maradona lamented that the Italian authorities are dealing with him like a criminal, recalling that he was the only one who had his earrings and watches confiscated.
