The Regional Meteorological Centre here on Saturday warned of "heavy to very heavy rainfall" in five districts of Gangetic West Bengal for three consecutive days till July 23.
"Heavy to very heavy rain (7-20 cm) with lightning likely to occur at one or two places over E & W (East and West) Midnapore, N&S (North and South) 24 Parganas and Jhargram districts of Gangetic West Bengal," said the weather bulletin.
Heavy rain is also on the cards for other districts of West Bengal, with Purulia, Bankura, one or two places over Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Coochbehar, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, and East and West Bardhaman will also witness heavy rains over next two days.
According to the weather officials, Friday's Well Marked Low-Pressure Area (WML) over the northwest Bay of Bengal concentrated into a depression and lay centred on Saturday morning. It is very likely to move west northwestwards and cross north Odisha and West Bengal coast between Chandbali and Digha, close to Balasore around evening.
Kolkata's maximum recorded temperature at 34.9 degrees Celsius was three notches above average and the minimum at 26.9 degrees a notch above average. The relative humidity at 92 per cent has made the climate very sultry.
The rainfall recorded in the last 24 hours is 3.8 mm.
The sea conditions will be rough, hence the fishermen are asked not to venture into the sea.
