Metal and automobile stocks gained the most in the day's trade at the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), however, information technology (IT) stocks fell in the intra-day.
The major sensex gainers on Tuesday around 1.30 p.m. were led by Mahindra and Mahindra, up 3.02 percent at Rs.1,366; Sesa Sterlite, up 2.92 percent at Rs.300.90; Tata Motors, up 2.28 percent at Rs.515.40; Dr Reddy's Lab, up 2.15 percent at Rs.2,833; and BHEL, up 2.01 percent at Rs.225.50
The losers were: HDFC, down 1.98 percent at Rs.1,090.70; Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), down 1.71 percent at Rs.2,444, Sun Pharma, down 0.96 percent at Rs.807, Hindustan Unilever, down 0.60 percent at Rs.720.25; and HDFC Bank, down 0.58 percent at Rs.827.40.
The benchmark index touched a record high of 26,526.62 points Tuesday, surpassing its previous high of 26,413.11 point that was touched Monday.
The 30-scrip Sensitive Index (Sensex) of the S&P Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 26,482.56 points, was trading at 26,487.85 points (at 01.30 p.m.), up 81.89 points or 0.31 percent from the previous day's close at 26,390.96 points.
The Sensex touched a high of 26,530.67 points and a low of 26,395.17 points in the trade so far.
