The Congress on Monday said the Modi government is abusing and misusing the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Income Tax Department and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) against its political opponents and thus setting a dangerous precedent.

The party was reacting to the Directorate attaching Rs 1.16-crore worth of assets belonging to Congress leader P. Chidambaram's son Karti, who is being probed for receiving alleged kickbacks in getting Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB)clearance in the Aircel Maxis deal when his father was the Union Finance Minister.

Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari said the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s ideology rested on three things - the CBI, Income Tax Department and the Enforcement Directorate.

"All three instruments of the state are being abused and misused against their political opponents. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and his government is setting a very dangerous precedent.

"As far as legal remedies are concerned, the fact remains that the former Finance Minister (Chidambaram) is far more an able counsel than the present Finance Minister and he knows his legal remedies very well," said Tewari.
