Hailing Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his performance during the first year of the NDA government, Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on Monday said Modi has done wonders in a short span, which the Congress could never do even in two decades.

Under the visionary and dynamic leadership of Modi, the prestige and honour of the country has enhanced across the globe, Badal told reporters in Muktsar, some 250 km from state capital Chandigarh.

"Today, India has emerged as a global superpower due to which every Indian, including the NRI brethren, are feeling proud," he said.

Badal said the work done by Modi for transforming the destiny of the country and its people within a year could never be done by the Congress even in more than 20 years.

The chief minister said that during the last one year, the National Democratic Alliance government has launched several pro-poor schemes for ensuring the welfare of the common man.

He said none of the previous governments at the Centre had initiated such pro-people schemes in the short span of one year.

Badal's Shiromani Akali Dal and the BJP have been running an alliance government in Punjab since 2007.

To a query, Badal said the Punjab government has embarked on a major plan for strengthening the irrigational network to facilitate the people in water-logged areas.

He said the state government has released the amount of compensation meant for farmers who suffered huge losses due to incessant rains.
