Prime Minister Narendra Modi Thursday lauded former Afghan president Hamid Karzai for his immense contribution to the strengthening of India-Afghanistan relations.

At a meeting here, Modi once again congratulated Karzai for his leadership and sagacity in ensuring a historic and peaceful political transition and formation of a national unity government in Afghanistan, an official release said.

Karzai said the friendship between India and Afghanistan was time-tested.

India's contribution to the development and reconstruction of Afghanistan was deeply appreciated in Afghanistan. In particular, India's support for human resource development in Afghanistan was invaluable, he added.

The former Afghan president briefed Modi on the developments in Afghanistan following the formation of the national unity government.

Modi said India was committed to extending full support to the new government and to the people of Afghanistan in their efforts to build a strong, peaceful, inclusive, prosperous and democratic country.
