Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday remembered the country's fifth Prime Minister, Chaudhary Charan Singh, on his 115th birth anniversary, eulogising him as the champion of the peasants.
"Remembering Chaudhary Charan Singh ji on his birth anniversary. Chaudhary Sahab served the nation with utmost dedication. He worked assiduously for the development of our villages and always championed the rights of our farmers," Modi tweeted.
Charan Singh was in office from July 28 1979 to January 14, 1980 and was an ardent defender of farmers' rights.
He was born in Noorpur village in what is now Uttar Pradesh's Hapur district in 1902 and died on May 29, 1987, at the age of 84.
