A 21-year-old Indian Navy sailor Mohan Raj died after he suffered grievous injuries during a firing drill onboard INS Gomati, a government statement said on Thursday. A Board of Inquiry has been ordered.
Mohan Raj, Seaman - First Class, suffered injuries "whilst carrying out combat weapon firing drills at sea".
"The sailor was airlifted from the ship to the nearest naval hospital INHS Asvini, Mumbai by a Sea King helicopter, however, he succumbed to his injuries," said the statement issued by the Defence Wing.
A Board of Inquiry has been ordered to determine the cause of the incident, added the statement.
Mohan Raj, who hailed from Katpudi in Tamil Nadu, is survived by his parents and two siblings.
