In order to strengthen the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), two battalions of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) will be converted into those of the NDRF.

The union cabinet, presided over by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the proposal here on Wednesday, an official statement said.

The conversion is meant to provide quicker response to eastern Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Arunachal Pradesh during any natural or man-made disaster and enhance the capability of the existing NDRF battalions.

The two new NDRF battalions will be deployed at Varanasi and Arunachal Pradesh, the communique added.
