The Delhi High Court has said that there is a need to stop illegal construction in the national capital and development has to abide by the statutory master plan of the city.

A division bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C. Hari Shankar said that such unauthorised construction has a severe impact on the sanitation and health conditions in Delhi.

Citizens of Delhi as well as public officials have to ensure that the provisions of law are strictly complied with, the court observed.

The court was hearing a PIL filed by an NGO All India Anti Corruption and Crime Prevention Society which sought direction to the authorities to demolish 75 illegally constructed units under the South Delhi Municipal Corporation.

Earlier, the bench had appointed court commissioners to physically inspect such illegal properties and sought reports regarding the illegal constructions under the East, North and South Delhi Municipal Corporations.
