The NHRC on Friday issued a notice to Uttar Pradesh authorities over the alleged beating up of disabled people by police at Bijnore collectorate. It called for a report on the matter within two weeks.
Taking note of a media report which said that a superintendent of police (SP) brutally beat people with disabilities, who were protesting outside the collectorate on July 22, the NHRC issued notices to Uttar Pradesh's chief secretary and police chief.
"The commission has observed that the contents of the media report, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of human rights," the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) said in a statement.
According to the media report, a group of disabled people went to the collectorate to present a memorandum in support of their eight demands, including increase in disability pension and relaxation in gas and electricity connections.
