Nigeria's National Sports Commission (NSC) is confident that the country's under-20 women's football team will qualify for the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup, a top official has said.
Gbenga Elegbeleye, the commission's director general said this to reporters Saturday in Abuja after the team defeated their South African counterparts 6-0 that there was no room for any fears at all, reports Xinhua.
The match played at the Abuja National Stadium was the first leg tie in the final round of the competition's African qualifiers.
The winners of the Nigeria/South Africa pairing will join another African side to qualify for the competition scheduled for Canada in August.
According to him, South Africa is out of the game already as Nigeria will go to Canada to represent Africa.
"I am certain that we will go to South Africa to beat them," Elegbeleye said.
He hinged his optimism on the fact that Nigeria had qualified for the previous six editions of the FIFA U-20 Women' s World Cup.
The NSC director-general assured that the team would also do better than before at the competition.
The return match will take place on Jan 25 in South Africa. The seventh edition of the FIFA U-20 Women' s World Cup will be held from Aug 5 to Aug 24.
