Nothing is perfect immediately, take GST's example: Parrikar

Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, cornered by the Opposition in the assembly over a controversial order, on Wednesday cited the example of the GST to illustrate how legislations sometimes are not perfect in the immediate sense.

The Opposition was forcing him to tweak a recent government order that disallows government employees to attend public grievances meetings at homes of elected representatives.

Parrikar said the order has been amended but gave an explanation behind implementing it in the first place.

"No one in the world can claim that 'what I have done is immediately perfect'. Take Goods and Services Tax for example, all states decide together. But GST has seen six or seven major modifications. It's happening even now," Parrikar told the Goa assembly on Wednesday.

When the government realised the prices of cigarettes had fallen, they increased taxes and matched it, said Parrikar, adding: "A mistake has to be rectified. Sometimes due to oversight, errors can impact other things."
