The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party Thursday warned the Tamil Nadu Assembly secretary of legal action if he fails to notify the Sri Rangam constituency as vacant following the conviction and disqualification of the then chief minister J. Jayalalithaa.
In a letter to assembly secretary A.M.P. Jamaluddin, DMK leader and legislator J. Anbazhagan said that "In spite of this representation if you fail to exercise your duty and refrain from notifying Sri Rangam Constituency as vacant, I will be constrained to initiate appropriate proceedings against you thereby holding you liable for all costs and consequences arising there from."
AIADMK general secretary J. Jayalalithaa was elected from the Sri Rangam constituency in May 2011.
However she was disqualified from being a member of the Tamil Nadu assembly following her conviction Sep 27 by a court in Bangalore which sentenced her to a jail term of four years and imposed a fine of Rs.100 crore in the disproportionate assets case.
According to Anbazhagan, it is the duty of the assembly secretary to notify a constituency as vacant once a member is disqualified.
He also asked Jamaluddin and other secretaries to the Tamil Nadu government to remove the pictures of Jayalalithaa from the government offices and other schemes of the government.
Anbazhagan said O. Panneerselvam has already been sworn in as the new chief minister by Governor K. Rosaiah Sep 29.
He warned the secretaries to the state government of legal action if the government departments and undertakings do not act within 24 hours from the date of receipt of his representation.
