Heatwave in India: Odisha, Telangana continue to boil under high temperatures

Several parts of Odisha continued to reel under severe heat wave conditions with 15 cities including the state capital registering temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius on Friday.

Titlagarh town, in western Odisha, which had recorded 47 degree Celsius on Thursday registering country's highest temperature, continued to boil as mercury soared at 47.5 degree Celsius on Friday throwing normal life out of gear. Four places including Sonepur, Bolangir and Sundargarh recorded temperature above 46 degrees while capital Bhubaneswar registered 40.5 degree Celsius.

Bhubaneswar met department director Sarat Chandra Sahu said the heat wave would continue till April 23, and even though there may be decrease of temperature after it, the mercury would hover above 40 degree Celsius. He also said that there is possibility of thunderstorms in several parts of the state that would help in bringing down rising temperature.

Telangana also remained in the grip of heat wave with many places sizzling with maximum temperature over 44 degrees Celsius.

Nalgonda was the hottest place with mercury rising to 45 degrees. Nizamabad was a close second at 44.9 degrees, followed by Bhadrachalam (44.8) and Adilabad (44.3).

Ramagundam, which on Thursday recorded 46.1 degrees Celsius, the highest for the season, was slightly better with 44.2, while it was 44.1 degrees in Mahabubnagar.

For the second time this month, Hyderabad recorded 43 degrees. The city had recorded 43 earlier on April 14, the highest recorded in 43 years for the month of April.

The met office has warned that severe heat wave conditions are likely to prevail in Adilabad, Nizamabad, Karimnagar, Medak and Nalgonda districts on Saturday. Heat wave conditions are very likely to prevail at many places in all districts of Telangana, it said.

The heat wave conditions also continued in parts of neighbouring Andhra Pradesh. Kavali in south coastal Andhra and Tirupati in Rayalaseema recorded 43.6 degrees Celsius on Friday.

The mercury soared to 43.1 in Kurnool while Vijayawada recorded 42.7 degrees.

The Met Office has warned that severe heat wave conditions may continue in Anantapur and Kurnool of Rayalaseema and heat wave conditions in all districts of Rayalaseema on Saturday.

The heat wave has claimed more than 100 lives in the two states so far this season.
